What is Teaming Up 4 Healthy Learners?

This initiative supports CBE schools, in partnership with Alberta Health Services, to set and address proactive, sustainable goals that impact all students in the areas of:

  • physical activity
  • healthy eating
  • positive social behaviours

Schools examine how all staff can promote health and wellness outcomes throughout the school day, in particular during non-instructional time.

Schools are recognized for their hard work and achievements via a three-level award scheme.

Beluga Olympics at Beddington Heights Elementary

In mid-February, staff, students and parents enjoyed a beautiful afternoon in the sun participating in 22 different Olympic stations. Staff and parents worked together to create all activity centers. Students had a great time exploring and playing in events such as hockey, luge, cross country skiing, snow shoe relay, kinick kick, ski jumping and many other creative ideas. Prior to the outdoor fun, Beddington Heights held a kick-off assembly at which the actual Olympic torch made a guest appearance. Picture taking opportunities abounded. The Olympic spirit is alive and well at Beddington Heights...in fact they are already planning their second annual winter celebration for next year!

Sam Livingston Olympic Events

Sam Livingston School held 2 events during the Winter Olympics. The first event took place 8 days leading up to the Olympic Games with a different activity everyday. This was held in the hallways due to gymnastics set up in the gym. The other event was a 2 hour Mini Olympic event outside with 6 stations: hockey, curling, omniken ball (cooperation game), luge, bobsled and slalom skiing. Here are some highlights from those events.

Killarney does it again! Olympic Fun Fit Friday

On February 19, students at Killarney School worked their way through 8 athletic stations where parents (and thanks so much to those parent volunteers) recorded their numbers on Sport Fit slips. At home, these students could enter their numbers on the www.sportfitcanada.com site in order to find out which 3 Olympic sports they would be best at. All around the school, team spirit was demonstrated as older students helped younger students and they all cheered each other on to do their best. As a wrap-up, the students paraded into the gym with country flags of all sorts to celebrate their success Olympic-style!

Scenic Acres Mini Winter Olympics

Students at Scenic Acres School participated in their very own Mini Winter Olympic Games on February 23, as part of our Teaming Up 4 Healthy Learners program. Dressed in red and white or anything 'Canada', students worked cooperatively in their house teams to promote cooperation, physical activity and school spirit. The Olympic theme was used to encourage the Olympic values of excellence, fairness, peace, respect, personal growth, leadership and fun! The afternoon was a huge success. All students received a Participation Nation sticker at our medal ceremony to conclude our event

Branton School’s 2nd Annual "Girls’ Night Out"

Over 50 girls from Grades 7-9 enjoyed getting together and celebrating "being real." This wonderful evening began with an enthusiastic talk from Olympic Wrestler Christine Nordhagen about following your dreams. Following the guest speaker, the girls were split into mixed groups to visit 3 interactive workshops: a woman paramedic talked about being a woman in the workplace, another guest speaker discussed inner and outer beauty and how it all fits, and the last one included a feel-good session called "Fan Mail Activity." In this activity, the girls introduced themselves to one another and then wrote a positive message (a genuine compliment) on a piece of paper which went into the other girl’s envelope with whom they just met. By the end of the session, each girl would have more than 10 messages. This envelope would then be opened after the girl returned home as a keepsake from the evening. In the gym, as a conclusion, the girls watched a 5-minute video of uplifting slides and music made by one of Branton’s teachers. As the girls left that evening to go home, they each received a rose to remind themselves of just how beautiful they are!
