Employability Skills Portfolio

You stop into a car dealership, interested in buying a new vehicle. Would you be willing to purchase based on what the salesman tells you about the vehicle? Or would you want to see evidence of what it can do? What makes one vehicle different from the others?

As you begin your career journey, you’ll need to be like the salesman - able to both show and tell about what you have to offer. Businesses and schools are looking for employees and students with a variety of skills and interests. They also want evidence that we can organize our lives, work with other people and continually improve ourselves. Using a portfolio is a great way to do this!

A career portfolio is a showcase of your skills, talents, dreams, goals and other unique attributes.

If you don’t know your skills, how can you sell them to others?

Portfolio building is a way to gather information about yourself and to help you to identify your major skills, interests and life accomplishments. Understanding your personal assets and identifying the skills you develop in everyday activities is important. As you build your Portfolio, you may be surprised at how many skills you have!

A portfolio is a way to set yourself apart – it can help you organize and save examples of your accomplishments, and give you a head start in planning your future. It can be used to:

  • Get a job your are interested in
  • Apply for a scholarship
  • Gain entrance to a university, college or technical school program
  • Get a volunteer position to use or develop your skills
  • Have information on-hand to complete job applications
  • Use as a toolkit to make career decisions

Your Portfolio shows others what you’re all about!

Just using a Portfolio tells a lot about your skills!

  • Have initiative
  • Are organized
  • Can analyze and evaluate information
  • Have layout and design ability
  • Can communicate visually
