1988 Winter Olympics

1750 athletes came from 57 different countries to participate in the 15th Winter Games. Some of the things we found out were that: Canadian figure skater, Brian Orser, won a silver medal in the mens figure skating competition. Canadian skier, Karen Percy, won 2 bronze medals. Canada came fourth in skiing. Matti Nykanen of Finland won 3 gold medals in the ski jumping competition. Russia had the most medals in Hockey. The medals were given out at Olympic Plaza.
The motto of the Olympics is "faster, higher, stronger".

In Calgary's future:

We think that there are going to be flying cars and you won't have to walk anywhere.
There will be books that tell you the words automatically and you can tell them to slow down when you want them to.
We think that there will be robots that you can send to tell people things, so you won't have to be on the phone anymore.
We think that you won't need to buy anything - you can just ask for it and a robot will bring it to you. The robots will be like a bank and have all the money.

Calgary will be like Harry Potter books - messages will be sent to you by air and when you rip it open the message will start talking to you.
You won't need to fly on a plane anymore because you will be automatically transported there ("teleport") in about one second.
You won't need to write with pencils any more because you will turn the pencils on and tell it what to write and it will do it for you.
You won't have to go to school anymore because you will already know everything.

Olympics 1988

On February 23rd the 1988 Olympics turned toward Calgary. C.O.P. was where bobsled, lugeand skiing were. Eddy the Eagle was one of the highlights of the Winter Olympics. He ski-jumped for England and he came in dead last. On February 23, 1988, 12 year old Robin Perry carried the Olympic Torch into McMahon Stadium. Today the torch is on display at the Municipal Building.

The games lasted for 10 days. The Olympic Oval has the fastest ice in the world. Calgary had lots of chinook winds which made the weather more like spring than like winter. The Jamaicans entered a bobsled team. They raced, even though they had never seen snow before. They trained in the sun and came to Calgary to compete!

We went down to Olympic Plaza where the medals were given out to the winners! The park has a water fountain and a waterfall. You can see all the winner's names down there. They are on the rocks as plaques.
