Stanley Goes Back in Time to Visit Calgary's Old City Hall!

The city began building Old City Hall in 1907. City council raised the taxes to get $300,000, so that they could pay for the building (City Hall) because they didn't have enough money to pay for it. Because they didn't have enough money the building designers did not give the mayor a big throne room.

Old City Hall was made out of sandstone. The designer chose sandstone because it would not burn. That is also why there are no fire escapes at Old City Hall.

On the outside, Old City Hall has dormers (windows that stick out from the slant on the roof) with raised lanterns on the corners of the building.

Back in 1911 the builders didn't have enough money to put the clock in the tower. When the city finally raised enough money to finish the building, the clock size was too big so they traded it in for a smaller size to save money!

They did not put the clock in until 1912. Today, when all of the people who work at City Hall go home, two ghosts come out. There is a boy and a girl ghost. The boy ghost haunts the basement because he died in a jail cell. There used to be 15 jail cells in the basement of City Hall! The girl ghost haunts the stairs because her husband would not come home from work at City Hall. Now she haunts the stairs in Old City Hall where her husband used to work!

In the future we think:

that someone will try and set Old City Hall on fire but it will turn into glass (you can figure out why it would turn to glass!!).
