Stanley Visits Fort Calgary

In 1792 David Thompson was the first person who visited the place where the fort was going to be built. In 1875 'Ephem Brisebois and 50 other mounties from Ottawa were sent to build the fort. When the fort was finished 'Ephem started calling the fort "Fort Brisebois". After 'Ephem called the fort "Fort Brisebrois", Colonel J. Macleod picked a new name for Fort Brisebrois...Fort Calgary!

In 1882 Fort Calgary was torn down. The Mounties then built a house known as the Calgary Barracks. In 1884 the Calgary Barracks became a city. The old Fort Calgary was forgotten for 50 years. The Mounties left the Calgary Barracks in 1914. The Grand Trunk Railway came and demolished all the buildings around the barracks except the Deane House. In 1997 archaeologists tried to rebuild Fort Calgary as it was back in the 1800s. Now the fort is preserved for the public. Today Fort Calgary is a Historic BRuilding.
