Fort Calgary

Could you imagine being outside building Fort Calgary for hours each and every day? Well when Fort Calgary was being built in 1885 there were at least 100 people who probably had that problem.
Did you know that Calgary was going to be called Brisebois? No one really liked Brisbois, so they looked for a different name. Colonel Macleod, who came from Scotland suggested Calgary. Calgary is a bay in Scotland, a name that inspired the Colonel from the Scottish Bay. Mostly everyone liked that name so, that’s what they called it.
In 2003 there was a big fire that burned three buildings, and left two. Also, some of the fence that they used to guard their stuff burned.
Did you know there is a time capsule that was buried in 1994? It is going to be opened in 2094. What is in the time capsule?

Inglewood

Inglewood
Could you imagine Calgary being only about 1 km long! I can’t, Calgary is sooooooo big now.
The houses back then were really tall not wide. They had it that way to save space. Is that smart? I think so.
The power lines are above ground so you better be careful or you might run into them. But in some new places like Riverbend they’re underground most of the time.
The schools back then were two or three stories tall. I don’t really think that's a smart idea, because what if there was a fire. I would feel sorry for the people on the 2nd or 3th floor.
When they build new houses they try hard to make them look like the old houses. All the old houses have small fences around the front yard.
In Inglewood they have straight streets instead of cul de sacs.I have this song stuck inside my head that my dad told me when you come across a cul de sac turn around and go back.
Inglewood is very close to the Elbow River. Inglewood was going to be on one side of the Elbow River but the C.P.R decided to make their station on the other side of the river. Everything, well almost everything, ended up on that side.

Patrick Burns

Did you know that Patrick Burns was one of the Big Four?
The Big Four gave money to create the Calgary Stampede. Together Burns, George Lane, A.E. Cross, and A.J. Mclean gave $100,000. That’s alot of money!
Burns was an Alberta Senator. Patrick Burns’ uniquely
designed residence was built in 1901 on Fourth Street South West where the Colonal Belcher Hospital stands today until it got demolished in 1956. The Burns house was among the most
impressive structures in Calgary.
Pat Burns was a well known rancher. In 1910 the Burn’s Shamrock Brand was probably the best-known meat in western Canada. Pat Burns sold his meat packing interest for 15 million in 1928. He owned a mansion that cost $40,000.

The Deane House

Can you believe that they somehow moved the Deane House to the other side of the river! I have no idea how they did it but wouldn’t the ice break if it was on the ice?
Guess what they say, that the attic in the place was haunted. But was it really haunted? I think they have two ghosts that haunted that place. Thinking of it gives me the creepies. It is said that the Deane House may be the most haunted place in Alberta. There is a super- visor called Robert Jension. The house was build for the Northwest Mounted Police captain Richard Burton in 1908 . The house was located on the east side of the Elbow River. I wonder who made it and who lived in it.
There is a river beside the house. The house was made of wood. It was blue and the roof on top was brown. You know it is now a restaurant. It was cold and it was also damp but I think it was cool how we got to see it.

FLAT SABRINA
By Sabrina

I became flat because of a humongous soccer ball when I was playing soccer. When I wasn’t flat I had lots of fun. I could play soccer, basketball, and go biking. My favorite hobbies were biking, soccer, daydreaming, skipping, hiking, and swimming. My favorite books were the Magic Tree House ones.
Being flat isn’t so bad because I can travel in an envelope of course. The good thing about being flat is if the room is locked I can slide under the crack.
My name is Sabrina. I live in Paris. I was walking to the garbage can to put the garbage in and it was pretty windy. As soon as I left the wind carried me to Calgary.
I looked down and said, “I want to see this place.” The wind carried me down. Once I got down I saw a rollercoaster. It lit up my eyes so I went on it. Then I felt sick afterwards. There was a tower shaped like a candle. Then I found out it was the Calgary Tower. I saw the door and when I got in it looked amazing so I explored. When I was done I wanted to go back to Paris.
I went outside. Suddenly the wind started blowing. A gust of wind carried me on a tour all around Calgary. The wind carried me down to the ground. I walked around and saw the City Hall School and I went in and explored.

FLAT MIMI
By Katrina

Hi, I am Flat Mimi. I am from Paris. When I was at the Eiffel Tower there was a strong gust of wind.
It blew me to the outskirts of Calgary. I saw this huge rollercoaster and my eyes lit up. I stuck some people on me then kept walking. When I finally got to the rollercoaster I found a pump and blew myself up but it didn’t last long. When I got off the rollercoaster I was flat again. Then suddenly a person picked me up and threw me in a bag and into a truck. I got out somehow and landed with a splat on the pavement.
I saw this huge building. It looked like a school! A girl came out of the school and picked me up and brought me inside the school. I now live inside a dark dark desk. And inside the dark dark desk there is a dark dark book and I am in that book. Sometimes I can get out.
Lately I’ve been trying to get the the Calgary Tower and today I got to the top. What a nice view! When I was done I jumped out of an open window and flew safely down to the ground. When I got back to my journal I had a little sleep for tomorrow’s adventure.
The next day I saw the Calgary Stampede and it was great! I got cotton candy and saw the rodeo. I even got an autograph! When I got home it was very very late. I’m thinking of staying in Calgary so I can see the rodeo every year! I’m very excited as in a couple of days I’m going to City Hall School. We will go to Steven Ave. and see all the old buildings.

FLAT MRS. MADISON
By Michelle

One morning there lived a Flat Mrs. Madison. She decided to come to Calgary to see the Zoo and Toys-R-Us but how could she get there? Flat Mrs. Madison thought and thought. She stood on her hands and that didn’t work, so she ran in circles. Finally she came up with an idea.
She said to herself, “It’s windy out, so I can blow from Mexico to Calgary to see the Zoo and Toys-R-Us. It might take a day or two to get there.” She stood outside and the wind blew her away. She said “This is going to be fun.”
A day had gone by and Mrs. Madison had landed in Red Deer. After she had ten hours of sleep she decided to blow away again. Before she left to go to the zoo and to Toys-R-Us she asked, “Where did I sleep?”
An old man came to Mrs. Flat Madison and said, “You slept in my house.”
Well, thank you for letting me sleep in your house,” said Mrs. Madison. “Well, I’d better be on my way,” said Mrs. Flat Madison. She blasted off. Before she knew it, she had landed in the zoo. When she got there, she asked a girl, “Where am I?”
You’re in the Calgary Zoo, “ replied the girl.
“Oh, thank you for telling me,” said Flat Mrs. Madison.
“Wait, before you go, would you like to look at the animals at the Zoo with me?” asked the girl.
“Sure,” said Flat Mrs. Madison.
So off they went. They looked at the owls and everything else. Just before they were going to go, the girl asked Mrs. Madison “Do you want to come live with me?”
“Sure,” said Flat Mrs. Madison.
Before they left, Flat Mrs.Madison got flattened by an elephant, but she still lived.
“Tomorrow we can go to Toys-R-Us and Denny’s for supper,” said Flat Mrs. Madison. I also want to see the mare and the family of horses.
They lived happily ever after.

FLAT MIRANDA
By Ally

Hi my name is Flat Miranda. One night at Brownie camp a long time ago I was dreaming about ponies, princesses, etc. when the top bunk fell on me. Being flat is fun. I am sixteen years old. I have traveled to lots of places in an envelope. I can even roll up and it doesn’t hurt. The only problem about being flat is nothing fits when you go shopping. I’m as thin as a piece of paper. I like ice cream and apples, ponies and princesses (princes too). My favorite color is purple. I go to California Senior Art school. I like being flat.
I, Flat Miranda lived in California until a bird escaped from its cage. I jumped into the air and caught the end of the bird’s tail. Six weeks later I came across a humongous candle. I let go of the bird and drifted down. I asked somebody how the giant candle got there. They laughed. They told me it was called the Calgary Tower. Right at that moment I wanted to go to the top of a big hill and see the city. I wanted to climb the Calgary Tower, every single stair. Two hours later, I got to the top.
I stopped at the spinning restaurant for a bite to eat. After I was finished, I went up higher. I looked down. Right then, I wanted to buy a house and stay in Calgary. I climbed down every stair. When I reached the bottom, I called a taxi. I went to a little community called Riverbend and I bought a house in Riverbend. One day I bought a dog and named it Maddy. I have a couple of friends named Flat Mimi, Emma, Catherine and Superman. I love going to the Calgary Tower. I went to the zoo and saw elephants, tigers, lions and giraffes. I saw the parade. It was the best! Two weeks later, I went to Calaway Park and I went on the big roller coaster. After Calaway Park, I went home to relax on my bed. Calgary is really cool. I love going shopping. The only thing I miss about California is the Ocean.
