Explanation of the Project
From April 2001, a number of classes from three different countries
will engage in an innovative, telecollaborative project designed to explore
the concepts, facts and issues surrounding the importance and fragility of
wetland habitats in the world today. The project, Bog Ho! 2001, will enable
participating classrooms to conduct a comparative analysis of key components
within a wetland. Bog Ho! 2001 will have students and teachers engaging in:

a background study of the bio-diversity of wetlands
-
a one-day field study to gather data on a predetermined
list of wetland variables

sharing of comparative data through the Bog Ho! 2001 web
site. Data will include types of flora and fauna, digital and artistic representations
of species found and explanations of the various species life cycles.

using e mail, students will engage in communication with
other classrooms to further develop their understanding of the web of life
that surrounds all wetlands in other areas of the world.

From this sharing of data and information classrooms will
move towards discussion and debate on the essential understandings we hope
children will embrace as a result of participating in this project. These
reflections and conversations will also be posted on the web site.
Parameters for Participation
As this is the first year for Bog Ho! it was decided to limit
participation to six schools. Currently, we have three schools from Calgary,
two from England and one from New York State. If you would like to be considered

Duration
Project planning began in March 2001 and is expected to be completed
by July 2001.
Expected Outcomes
As previously mentioned the project is designed to meet all
learner outcomes in Grade 5 Science Topic C (Wetlands) with an emphasis on
addressing foundational understandings relating to wetland ecosystems:

Wetlands are (were) everywhere.

Wetlands provide a vital role for all life.

Wetlands are about interdependence.

What lies in the future for wetlands?
-
What do we need to do/change? Through the rich and rigorous
use of e mail, digital photography and video, word processing, databases
and scanning the students will address a wide variety of ICT Outcomes.
