Cartier
left France on April 30th,1534 with 2 ships and 61 crew
people. After 21 days he sailed to Newfoundland. In June he
discovered Prince Edward Island. He met a group of
Iroquois. He traded gifts and returned to France for winter.
He captured chief Donnacona's two sons. He arrived in France
in September.

After winter
in France, they sailed back to Canada in 1535,this time they
had three ships and 110 crew members. When they crossed the
ocean Donnacona's sons Domagaya and Taignoagny showed the
route to their home. They arrived in Stadacona in September
1535. They explored further up the river and met a group of
aboriginals living in Helaga on the island of Montreal.
Cartier climbed a hill and named it Mount Royal. He could
see that the river stretched a long way and by boat looked
difficult. He returned to Stadacona. There they built a camp
and spent the winter. The winter was cold there and many
crew members died. When he sailed back home in the spring he
took chief Donnacona and his two sons and other people. The
Iroquois never returned home, Donnacona and the others all
died in France.

In 1541
he made his third and last voyage. He left France in May
with 5 ships and a large crew of 1500 members. Cartier
wanted to start a settlement on the St.Lawerence River.
Cartier and the settlers reached Stadacona in August. The
people in Stadacona were not happy to see Cartier return. He
used land nearby without talking to them at first. When
Cartier visited Hochelaga on his last visit, he had gone
against their wishes. He had not brought Donnacona and the
others back from France. First he told people from Stadacona
that Donnacona was living in France. Later he admitted that
Donnacona had died. Cartier spent another cold winter there
and a lot of people died. He sailed back to France in June
1542. He took some rocks back that he thought had gold and
diamonds inside. The rocks were worthless and Cartier was
disappointed... It was about 60 years later before another
French explorer went back.
