Arctic Region

The Grade 2's had some discussions around landscape photography and how the feeling and message of the photo can be changed when people are put into the composition. The students had a photo shoot in the classroom where they depicted people helping each other in the Arctic. They used costumes and props to make the photograph fit with the climate of the region. Then using GIMP software, the student had to manipulate the landscape by adding the people. Strong writing was added to explain the work.

In the distance we hear the growl of the polar bear looking for food.
We feel the cold wind blowing on our faces.
Small mounds of snow surround us.
I see little snowy owl tracks leading to the nearby ditch.
Far away I hear the ice burg crashing.
Forgetting snowshoes is a dangerous thing.
We are stuck in the deep snow, with coldness around us.
We need to help each other in order to survive.
The hungry bear is getting closer.

Fatima, Brett and Andrew

There are icicles that are melting because the sun is beaming.
I hear the water dripping from them.
The sun is making an avalanche because the snow is melting.
I am afraid from falling through the cracks with the icicles.
A polar bear was chasing me and I fell off the glacier and broke my leg.
Ryan and Casey are taking me to safety.
We are worried that the polar bear will come back.
We have to hurry because animals will smell my blood and they will attack us.
We go to our igloo. We warm up, wrap up my leg, and we head towards the town that is a couple of miles away.
If Ryan and Casey weren’t near by hunting seals, I would have been in trouble.

Casey and Bryce

We are far from home and we are trying to share body heat.
We were exploring and it started to get cold.
We imagine kids playing in a big pile of snow and we wish we were with them.
The snow we walk in is deeper every step.
We have to walk a long journey to get home.
The polar bear is sleeping deep inside his cave.
I see a far man in the distance hunting seals in the ice.
A herd of caribou just ran by.
The hare is blending in with the snow.
The icicles are starting to melt with the sun beaming bright, drop, drop, drop.
The big blue sky is really wide and dark.
Next time, we need to be better prepared and not go 5 miles from home.

Taylor, Melissa and Ian

I see the steep rocky mountain that almost touches the sky.
It’s different to see with the brightness of the sun reflecting on the snow.
We are proud of ourselves because we caught a polar bear to share with family and friends.
I hear the Arctic fox howling gout to me.
He smells the fresh meat we pull in our sled.
We are excited to go back to our cozy igloo.
It will be a hard and tiring walk home.

Alyssia, Erik, and Alicia

The rocky mountain with the hidden face stands alone.
The distance cloud looks like a walrus.
We are the fierce hunters who have been looking for food for a long time.
We can’t wait to bring the caribou back to the people.
Tired from running and cold from the whistling wind we head back to the village.
Thinking about the meal the women will prepare makes us hungry.
We fear that the polar bear will come and attack us and take our caribou.
We would never leave this land because getting food from the land is exciting.

Matthew, Dagan and Shawn

I just heard a polar bear growl.
I hear a killer whale. It is tired and hungry.
I see tracks of the Arctic fox behind me.
When we catch caribou we dig holes and we roast them up.
Around the arctic there are usually Northern Lights.
I can see the ice cracking about me on the mountain and I can smell the fresh cold air.
There is no sun and I wish I could warm up.
There are hardly igloos around the Arctic today.
I am stuck in some slippery snow and the husky tried to pull me out but the dog leash is loose in my hand.
My friend is helping me up.
We are trying to survive in this cold weather.

Nic, Faryal and Fred

In the distance we see the pointy mountain reaching for the great blue sky.
We feel the icy wind blowing hard against our backs.
I am helping my little brother learn how to hunt.
We put the caribou skins on the snow so we won’t get cold as we patiently wait for the seal to come.
Suddenly air bubbles appear in the hole.
Brother can’t wait to get the seal.
I see the seal coming up for air.
We are successful.

Mitchell, Will and Caileigh

The Arctic landscape is cold and dangerous.
You can get lost without a compass.
We are stuck in the deep snow.
We are afraid as we hear the pack of wolves in the distance and upset that this has happened.
Behind the mountain is where we live.
Our igloo is a safe place we need to get to before the wolves find us.
We hope the huskies will come in time.

Yihong, Emily and Sean

I’m horrified when the polar bear is getting ready to jump on me.
We realize the mom is protecting its young.
It is hard to run away because the snow is so deep.
We are freezing, waiting, screaming for the polar bear to back away.
We are working together to get away from this angry bear.
Animals all run into the holes to get away.
You have to be careful in the tundra.
There is no body around so Kirsten in nice to save me.
Teeth chatter because we are terrified and cold.

Katie F, Kirsten and Chris

I feel the coldness going through my body.
Deep snow is covering the ground.
It is hard to walk in the snow and I slipped on some ice.
When I fell I got hurt and Aimee helped me up.
I can hear the huskies howling through the Arctic.
I can see polar bears sleeping after a hunt.
I can hear the Inuit people singing a spiritual song.
As we go home we can smell the sweet smell of the seals cooking and we are very tired and hungry.

Katelynn, Graeme and Aimee

I feel a freezing cold breeze waving across my cheeks.
I am risking my life through freezing cold temperatures.
I am fishing seals for family and friends.
I see an Arctic fox collecting leftovers from a polar bear.
Working hard fishing seals and storing them in the summer.
The temperature can drop to -80 C.
The Arctic is a good place for hunting seals.
If you are outside to long you will freeze.

Joey, Saxon and Diana

Bryce hit his leg on an icicle and fell.
He fell in a hole that is covered in snow and ice.
I hear him land inside the hole.
We pull him to the hospital but it takes a long time because it’s a long way to the Inuksuk town.
We were going over mountains and ice bergs.
We have to work together to pull him to the hospital and we are very, very tired.
The Arctic is a good place to get hurt because it’s so icy and the blizzards block your way of sight.
