Mr. Fielder Visits Glendale!

June 15, 2011

Mr. Fielder came to visit with our students right after lunch in the Learning Commons. With him were: Heather John (Manager of Visitor Experience of the Glenbow), Colleen Sharpe (Glenbow Art Curator), and Anna Lake (Adult Education Coordinator of the Glenbow) and the inspiration for the Hero Portrait Project at the Glenbow Museum. A number of parents were able to join us - THANK YOU FOR COMING!! - and some of them changed work schedules to be there. What a great way to support your children's work and learn something about the man who inspired it all in the process.

Mr. Fielder delighted us with tales of Yousuf Karsh and answered many questions by the students and the parents alike. It was a wonderful afternoon that many of us will remember for the rest of our lives.

Mr. Fielder had spoken with Estrellita Karsh just that morning to arrange for a special gift for our students. As per Yousuf's wishes, his original negatives that he personally developed by hand have been sealed in the National Archives never to be reprinted. A self-portrait of Yousuf (his favorite) is going to be printed for each of the students and the teachers as well as one for the school! Mr. Fielder and Mrs. Karsh will also be writing letters to the students thanking them for their hard work. In addition, Mr. Fielder has donated a signed book to the school library! THANK YOU very much. We're honoured.

All of the students wanted Mr. Fielder's autograph and he kindly oblidged despite the knowledge that a signed letter was forthcoming. The students were not to be deterred. It was touching the impact Mr. Fielder had on the students and you could tell that it was reflected back in a genuinely sincere manner as well. What a wonderful opportunity - truly a once in a lifetime opportunity.
