Kindergarten Curriculum Newsletter December 2011
We have now completed several months of Kindergarten. Our curriculum experiences have centered on beginning and learning basic skills and concepts, as well as becoming more comfortable with the structure and routines of Kindergarten. As new components are added to the program, we will continue to maintain and build upon your child’s previously learned skills.
Language Arts
The children have been given opportunities:
•Hear a variety of literature each day
•Stay on topic in a discussion
•Ask and answer questions
•Learn new vocabulary as we discuss different topics
•Practice naming and singing the days of the week and months of the year
•Learn new poems and finger plays as they relate to topics of study
•To do activities to help develop fine motor skills necessary for printing
•Practice learning both upper and lower case letters of the alphabet
•Practice learning to read and print their name
•To understand and demonstrate the role of a listener in group discussion and planning
•Participate in a variety of reading and writing experiences to enhance an interest in the reading and writing process
Mathematics
The children have been given opportunities to:
•Rote count to 10 (counting songs, calendar)
•Identify numerals one to ten
•Categorize items (by color, size and features)
•Count numbers of objects in sets up to 5
•Explore and investigate patterning
Creative Expression
The children have been given opportunities to:
•Create unique crafts and pictures
•Practice and strengthen fine motor skills (cutting, gluing, drawing and printing)
•Participate in the actions or movements that show words in a song
•Participate in dramatic play during various centers
Physical Skills and Well Being
The children have been given opportunities to:
•Correctly hold a pencil and scissors
•Focus on safety in the gym
•Practice loco-motor skills such as running, skipping, jumping and landing
•To establish routines and listening skills while in physical education.
•Movement using pathways (straight, curved, zigzag and direction)
•To participate in simple tag games that is aimed at core stability, body awareness and skill building
•Learn how to exit the school in the event of a fire in a quick, calm and organized manner
Technology
The children have been given opportunities to:
•To become comfortable with using a computer.
•To be able to run and use simple programs.
•To be able to identify main components of a computer (mouse, keyboard, monitor, headphones).
•Use the SMARTBoard and IPods
Personal Growth and Social Responsibility
The children have been given opportunities to:
•Work and be challenged at their own ability level
•Follow through and complete activities
•Show persistence when dealing with new materials
•Feel proud of their work
•Deal positively with feelings
•Self-directed at center time
•Accept responsibility for own behavior
•Become more self reliant
Community and Environmental Awareness
The children have been given opportunities to:
•Explore the school
•Learn appropriate listening skills
•Learn how to take care of classroom materials and school
